The Fig That Should Not Exist

Chicago, Illinois. Zone 5. Winter temperatures routinely drop to minus 10, minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit — cold enough to freeze the soil solid for weeks, cold enough to kill almost any fig tree on Earth. Figs are a Mediterranean plant. They belong to Greece, Italy, Turkey — places where winter means a light frost and a jacket. They do not belong to the Upper Midwest. And yet, in the 1980s, a gardener on the South Side noticed a fig tree growing against a south-facing brick wall that refused to die. Every winter, the top growth froze. Every spring, vigorous new shoots emerged from the base. By August, the tree was covered in ripe figs.

The gardener shared cuttings. The cuttings rooted. The tree was named Chicago Hardy — a tribute to the city where, by every botanical rule, figs are not supposed to grow. Today it is the most widely planted cold-climate fig in North America.

Here is how it works. The Chicago Hardy fig is genetically predisposed to fruit on new wood — the growth produced in the current season. Most fig varieties fruit on last year’s wood, which means a winter that kills the branches also kills the crop. Not Chicago Hardy. Even if the entire above-ground portion freezes to the ground at minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit, the roots survive — and in spring, the plant sends up vigorous new shoots that grow 4 to 6 feet in a single season and set fruit by late summer. In Zones 7 and warmer, where the branches survive winter, the tree also produces an early breba crop in June and July on the previous year’s wood. In Zones 5 and 6, you get the main crop from August through October on the new growth. Either way, you get figs.

Container-Grown, Easily Overwintered

For gardeners in Zones 5 and 6, the most reliable strategy is container growing. Chicago Hardy stays a manageable 4 to 6 feet in a large pot — big enough to produce a meaningful harvest, small enough to move into an unheated garage or shed for winter. The tree needs no light during dormancy. It needs only to stay above about 20 degrees Fahrenheit — well within the range of a typical unheated garage in most of the continental US. Water sparingly once a month during winter. In spring, when nighttime temperatures stay above 25 degrees, wheel the pot back into the sun. The tree will break dormancy within weeks.

In Zones 7 through 10, Chicago Hardy thrives in the ground year-round, reaching 10 to 15 feet at maturity with a broad, sculptural form. The deeply lobed, tropical-looking leaves — up to 10 inches across — make it one of the most ornamental fruit trees you can grow. In the ground or in a pot, it is self-fertile, drought-tolerant once established, and remarkably pest-free.

The fruit itself is a deep purple-brown with a rosy blush, about the size of a small plum. The skin is thin and edible. Will Chicago Hardy really survive a Zone 5 winter?

Here is the honest answer, not the marketing claim. The roots of Chicago Hardy will survive Zone 5 winters — rated to about minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit — and send up new shoots in spring. The above-ground branches will almost certainly die back to the ground when exposed to temperatures below 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, which happens every winter in Zone 5. This is normal. This is the strategy. The plant regrows 4 to 6 feet of new wood in a single season and sets figs on that new growth by late summer. In a typical Zone 5 summer (May through October), there is enough time for the main crop to ripen. In an unusually short or cool summer, some fruit may not fully mature before frost. Container growing with winter storage in an unheated garage is the most reliable path to a full harvest every year in Zones 5 and 6. In Zones 7 and above, the tree is increasingly reliable: the branches survive winter, you get two crops (breba in June-July on old wood, main crop August-October on new wood), and production increases with each passing year. The tree is genuinely cold-hardy for a fig. It is not invincible. But for cold-climate gardeners who want homegrown figs, it is the best option available.

Do I need a second fig tree for pollination?

No. Chicago Hardy is parthenocarpic — it sets fruit without pollination. This is the norm for common figs (Ficus carica) grown for home fruit production. The flowers are inside the fruit — what you eat is actually an inside-out flower structure called a syconium. No fig wasps are required, and you will not find a dead wasp inside your fig. That concern applies only to a specific type of fig (the Smyrna type, which requires pollination by a specialized wasp) grown commercially in California and the Mediterranean. Common figs like Chicago Hardy, Brown Turkey, and Celeste are parthenocarpic and produce fruit on their own. One tree in one pot on one patio is all you need.

How do I overwinter a potted fig in a cold climate?

This is the most reliable strategy for Zones 5 and 6. After the first hard frost in autumn, the leaves will yellow and drop — the tree is entering dormancy. Water it deeply one last time. Move the pot into an unheated garage, shed, basement, or sunroom where temperatures stay between 20 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The tree needs no light during dormancy — it has no leaves and is not photosynthesizing. Water sparingly once a month, just enough to keep the roots from completely drying out. Do not overwater — a dormant fig in a cold, dark space uses almost no moisture, and wet soil promotes root rot. In late winter or early spring, when nighttime temperatures outside stay above 25 degrees Fahrenheit, move the pot back into the sun. New leaves will emerge within 2 to 4 weeks. If a late frost is forecast after the tree has leafed out, cover it overnight or move it back into the garage temporarily. This annual rhythm — summer outdoors, winter in the garage — reliably produces figs in climates where in-ground figs would die to the ground every winter.

The leaves on my fig turned yellow and fell off. Did I kill it?

Almost certainly not. Figs are deciduous — they drop their leaves every autumn as part of their natural dormancy cycle. This is not a problem. It is the plant shutting down for winter. In Zones 5 through 8, leaf drop in October and November is expected and healthy. The plant is not dead. It is sleeping. If the leaves turned yellow and dropped during the growing season (May through August), the likely causes are: (1) overwatering — the most common reason. Let the soil dry more between waterings. (2) Underwatering — if the soil has been bone-dry for days and the leaves are crispy before dropping. Water deeply and consistently. (3) Transplant shock — if you recently repotted or moved the tree to a new location. Give it time to adjust. A healthy fig that drops its leaves in autumn will leaf out again vigorously in spring. The bare branches in winter are normal and desirable.

Do I really need to net the tree against birds?

Yes. Birds are the number one pest of figs — robins, starlings, and cedar waxwings can detect ripe fruit from blocks away and strip a tree in hours. Install bird netting when the figs begin to turn from green to purple-brown. Drape over the entire canopy and secure at the trunk or around the pot. Remove after harvest. Scare tape and plastic owls work for a few days. Netting works every time. A roll of bird netting costs about ten dollars and lasts for years. A single day of unprotected ripening can cost you an entire crop. This is not a debate among fig growers. Net or lose them.

How many figs will I get, and when?

Here is the realistic timeline. Year 0: Tree arrives as a well-rooted young plant, typically 12 to 24 inches tall. Year 1: Plant establishes roots and puts on 2 to 3 feet of new growth. You may see a few figs form in late summer. They may or may not ripen — young trees often drop their first fruit. Year 2: First meaningful harvest: 10 to 20 figs from late August through October on new growth. In Zones 7+, you may also get a small breba crop in June-July on the previous year's wood. Year 3 and beyond: 30 to 50 figs per season in a container, more in the ground. The fruit ripens over 6 to 8 weeks, not all at once — a steady supply rather than a glut. A mature in-ground tree in the South can produce to the point where you are giving figs away to neighbors. The fruit is medium-sized, purple-brown with a rosy blush, thin edible skin, and strawberry-pink flesh that is intensely sweet. Figs do not ripen after picking — wait for the fruit to soften and droop on its stem, signaled by a droplet of nectar at the eye. That fig is ready.
