Not all self-pollinating trees are equally forgiving. Here’s how they rank for a beginner with one sunny spot and one hole to dig:

What’s not on this list: apples, pears, sweet cherries, Japanese plums. Those all need a partner. If you have space for exactly one tree, pick from the column above. Most Self-Fertile Trees Still Need Pollinators
A self-fertile peach still needs bees to move pollen from the anthers to the stigma within each flower. The pollen is compatible β but it’s not mobile. No bees, no wind, or no paintbrush means those flowers still drop without setting fruit. Figs are the notable exception: common figs are parthenocarpic and set fruit without any pollination. If you see a fig tree covered in fruit with no bees in sight, that’s why.
For indoor growing, high-rise balconies, or areas with few pollinators: hand-pollinate. A soft artist’s paintbrush, twirled inside each open flower and moved to the next, does the job. Repeat daily while the tree is blooming. Works for all self-fertile citrus, peaches, and plums. Does not work for self-sterile apples and pears β those need actual cross-pollination from a genetically different variety.
Trees That Need a Partner β Don’t Plant These Solo
Plant any of these alone, and you get zero fruit. The biology doesn’t allow workarounds β a second genetically different variety is required.

The One Distinction That Determines Everything
Every fruit tree falls into one of two categories. Know which one yours is before you order:
One tree produces fruit on its own. Bees move pollen flower-to-flower on the same tree. Most self-fertile trees yield better with a second, but they fruit without one. Figs are the exception β they skip pollination entirely.
One tree alone produces nothing. You need two different varieties of the same species, blooming at the same time, within 50β100 feet. Two genetically identical trees (e.g., two Honeycrisp apples from the same source) don’t count β they can’t pollinate each other.
Triploids β The Sterile Trees That Can’t Pollinate Anything
Some apple and pear varieties carry three sets of chromosomes instead of two. They produce sterile pollen β they can neither pollinate other trees nor pollinate themselves. If your orchard plan includes a triploid, you need two other compatible diploid varieties nearby: one to pollinate the triploid, and one so the first pollinator has a partner. A triploid apple with only one companion means the companion gets pollinated but the triploid doesn’t β half a crop.
Known triploid apples: Bramley, Jonagold, Gravenstein, Ribston Pippin, Blenheim Orange, Crispin. Known triploid pears: Merton Pride. If you’re planting only two trees, avoid these and stick with diploid varieties β they pair cleanly without the extra math.
Three Rules That Matter
- Same species only. An apple won’t pollinate a pear. A pear won’t pollinate a cherry.
- Bloom time must overlap. Match pollination groups (numbered 1β6 depending on the classification system used by your nursery). Adjacent groups β Group 3 pollinates with Groups 2, 3, and 4 β work reliably.
- Check hardiness zones when pairing. Two trees that bloom together on paper are useless if one dies over winter. Before committing to a pollination pair, confirm both varieties survive in your USDA Zone. A Zone 5 apple paired with a Zone 8 apple means one tree freezes while the other lives.

I already planted a lonely tree. What do I do now?
- Option 1: Plant a second tree. Buy a compatible variety now. Even a young tree produces enough flowers to pollinate an established one within two years.
- Option 2: Graft a pollinator branch. A single branch of a compatible variety grafted onto your existing tree provides enough pollen for the whole canopy. This saves space and avoids planting a second tree.
- Option 3: Check nearby trees. A neighbor’s crabapple can pollinate your apple. A Bradford pear within 100 feet can pollinate your fruiting pear. Before buying a second tree, look around.
I only have space for one tree. What should I plant?
