Container Fruit Trees — The Complete Guide
Everything you need to grow fruit in pots — from choosing the right tree to winter storage
📋 5 Best Fruit Trees for Pots
Fig, kumquat, jujube, lemon, and peach — ranked by ease, speed to fruit, and container happiness. Pot sizes, soil mix, and winter care for each.
🪴 Fig Container Masterclass
The champion container fruit. Why potted figs fruit faster than in-ground ones. Pot size progression, root pruning, and the dry-down technique for sweeter figs.
🍊 Kumquat Container Guide
The cold-hardiest citrus — thrives in pots indoors and out. Indoor winter care, summer patio setup, feeding schedule.
🍑 Growing Peaches in Pots
Dwarf varieties for containers. Open-center pruning at patio scale. Container feeding schedule — biweekly tomato feed.
🫒 Jujube in Containers
The most drought-tolerant container fruit. Minimal pruning, zero pest pressure, and a tree that fruits reliably in a pot year after year.
🍋 Lemon Tree Container Care
The patio classic — drainage is everything. Winter indoor care, summer outdoor placement, and the citrus feeding schedule.
Container Supplies You Will Need
7–10 gallon to start. Terra cotta breathes but dries faster. Fabric pots air-prune roots. Plastic retains moisture. All need drainage holes. Start small and size up every 2–3 years.
Never garden soil. My blend: 50% quality potting mix + 25% perlite + 25% compost. Free-draining but moisture-retentive. Roots need air as much as water.
Moisture meter ($12) or a wooden dowel ($0). Stick it to the bottom of the pot — if it comes out damp, do not water. More container trees die from overwatering than drought.
A mature potted tree can weigh 75+ pounds. Put it on wheels from day one. You will need to move it for winter storage and seasonal sun chasing.
