Planting β Sun and Drainage Above All
- Site: Full sun β 6β8 hours minimum. South-facing wall is ideal in cool zones β the reflected heat mimics the Mediterranean hillsides these trees evolved on.
- Soil: Well-draining is the non-negotiable. pH 6.0β7.5. They tolerate sandy, rocky, and light clay soils β but they will NOT tolerate wet feet. On heavy clay, build a raised mound 12β18 inches high.
- Spacing: Standards: 10β15 feet. Hedge: 6β9 feet. Container: start 5-gallon, mature in 15β20 gallon.
Watering β The Splitting Prevention Protocol
The #1 frustration with homegrown pomegranates is fruit splitting. The fruit swells, the skin cracks, and ants and wasps move in before you can harvest. After years of trial and error, I can tell you with certainty: splitting is almost always caused by inconsistent watering.

Pruning β Shrub Form Produces More Fruit
Pomegranates naturally grow as multi-stemmed shrubs. You can train them as single-trunk trees β they look more formal β but the shrub form consistently outproduces the tree form by 40β60% in my experience. More stems = more fruiting wood = more pomegranates.
- Shrub form (my preference): Allow 3β6 strong suckers to develop into main trunks. Each winter, remove 1β2 of the oldest trunks at ground level to stimulate new productive growth. Never remove more than 30% of the canopy in one season.
- Tree form: Select one central leader. Remove ALL other suckers at the base β and keep removing them, because pomegranates sucker relentlessly. This is a maintenance commitment.
- When to prune: Late winter, during dormancy. Pomegranates fruit on short spurs on 2β3 year old wood AND on new growth β so annual light pruning improves production.
Harvesting β The Tap Test
- Fruit ripens late summer through fall. Pomegranates do NOT ripen after picking β wait until fully ready.
- My 3-point test: (1) Skin is fully colored and slightly matte (not glossy). (2) Fruit feels heavy for its size β heft it in your palm. (3) Tap it with your knuckle β a ripe pomegranate sounds slightly metallic, like tapping a hollow piece of wood.
- Storage: Whole pomegranates store for 2β3 months refrigerated. Arils freeze beautifully β spread on a tray, freeze solid, then bag. I use frozen arils in smoothies all winter.

Why No Fruit? β Pomegranate Diagnosis
- Too young. Nursery trees fruit in 2β3 years. Seed-grown pomegranates can take 5+. Patience.
- Not enough sun. Less than 6 hours of direct sun = few or no flowers. This is the #1 cause in home gardens.
- Too much nitrogen. Dark green, lush, vigorous leaves and zero flowers = over-fertilized. Stop fertilizing for a full season.
- Too much water. Constantly wet soil stresses the roots and the tree prioritizes survival over reproduction. Let the soil dry between waterings.
- Pruned at the wrong time. Pomegranates flower on new growth. If you prune heavily in spring, you remove the wood that would have flowered. Prune in late winter only.
