Bare Root Root Rot Rescue — The 5-Step Process
I’ve used this exact process on peach, apple, plum, and fig bare root trees. It works across species because the principle is the same: remove the rot, disinfect what remains, replant in fast-draining soil.
Step 1: Remove the tree and wash every root clean
Pull the tree from the ground or pot. Run lukewarm tap water over the roots until every bit of old soil is gone. You need to see the entire root system clearly — no hidden pockets of rot. Be thorough but gentle. The surviving healthy roots are tougher than they look.
Step 2: Cut off every rotted root — don’t hold back
Take sharp, clean pruners. Cut away every part of any root that is soft, brown, black, or smells sour. Don’t stop because you’re worried about removing too much.
